DMV’s licensing tests are designed to be scored objectively. Testing two-wheel vehicle operators is the best measurement of the skills necessary to operate safely in traffic because people often overestimate their own abilities. Safe riding requires knowledge and skill. When Stefanie Johnson is not educating her community on how to minimize the spread and impact of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases, she enjoys creating unique items and helping others learn to spin, knit, and weave. North Adams, Massachusetts: Storey Publishing, 2012. The Spinner’s Book of Yarn Designs: Techniques for Creating 80 Yarns. Left to right: Farrow rib, stockinette, and plain-weave swatches worked in gimp yarn. With a closer sett, that weave structure could be made tighter for a durable woven fabric that would be perfect for a cozy, lightweight throw. The gimp yarn’s bumpy texture locked together, making the weave structure less open but giving it a beautiful drape. The traditional three-ply alpaca yarn, woven at 13 wraps per inch (wpi), was slightly thinner than the gimp yarn in the same fiber at 12 wpi however, there was a noticeable difference in the openness of the weave structure. How does gimp yarn affect weave structure? To find out, I wove some small squares in plain weave on a 4-inch pin loom with both a gimp yarn and a traditional three-ply yarn. When exploring other uses for gimp yarns, my thoughts wandered over to my looms. Knit up, gimp yarns give the surface of plain stockinette stitch a slightly textured, less uniform look, creating a more rustic quality. Some spinners use gimp yarns for socks when they prefer not to spin more traditional three- or four-ply yarns. The durable structure of gimp yarn lends itself to knitted items that receive a high amount of wear, such as socks and mittens. Notice the dramatic difference in the look of the spiral in the bulkier gimp yarn at the bottom compared to the finer gimp yarn at the top. Based on that information, she tried spinning several different gauge combinations (D and E). She tried plying with different angles and amounts of twist (B and C) to decide what she liked. Stefanie started by spinning a finer, higher-twist single and larger, lower-twist single (A). Note that the heavier the weight of the gimp yarn, the more visible the spiraling effect will be, so the difference in the thicknesses of the two plies looks more dramatic in a bulky-weight yarn than in a laceweight. For stronger spiraling effect, hold the thicker single at a 45-degree angle to the orifice while holding the thinner single straight on. The method of plying influences the extent of the spiraling, but with gimp yarns’ differently sized singles, the yarn will inevitably appear to spiral, even when both singles are held so that they enter a spinning wheel’s orifice straight on. I prefer to knit with high-twist yarns (when using yarns with loose ply twist, I often split the yarn with my knitting needle), so for me, a gimp yarn is a good way to produce a high-twist yarn that doesn’t feel like twine. There is something attractive about the imbalance created by spinning a soft, fluffy single and a thinner, denser single and then plying them together with a high twist. I find gimp yarns pleasing to both the eye and the hand. To increase the spiral effect, hold the larger single at a stronger angle. When plying a large and small single, the yarn will appear to spiral, even when the singles are both held at the same angle and with the same tension. The bumps fit together when knit, creating a durable fabric that is denser than a piece knit from a standard two-ply yarn with equal-diameter singles. When plied, the thicker single produces bumps along the length of the yarn. In her book The Spinner’s Book of Yarn Designs: Techniques for Creating 80 Yarns, Sarah Anderson explains that a gimp yarn is constructed from two singles plied together, with one single having half the diameter of the other. For the handspinner, gimp means something a little different. In the textile world, the term “gimp” originally referred to thread that had a cord or wire running through the center today, gimp is often used to indicate a braided or twisted trimming made from this type of thread. Gimp yarns can be considered spiral-adjacent yarns, but occasionally, you’ll find them classified with bouclé. Although I admit that many of my handspun yarns remain in my basket for quite some time before becoming finished objects, the sense of energy in my spiral yarns makes them feel as though they’re begging to be used! They’re the wiggly students in class, yearning to participate. I enjoy seeing the mesmerizing cascade of coils undulating from my basket of handspun. Spiral yarns are quite possibly my favorite types of yarn to create. PETSc has so many options for my program that it is hard to keep them straight How does PETSc’s -help option work? Initially, the name ‘Inox’ worked against him because of its strong branding in the entertainment industry through its multiplex arm, Inox Leisure.“We had to convince them (investors) that we were a technology company with the infrastructure in the heavy duty wind power industry,” says Devansh. Infrastructure was dead, and wind is clearly a part of infrastructure,” he says. But from 2010-2013, there was policy paralysis in the country. One of the biggest challenges he faced was an unanticipated policy shift: In 2012, barely three years after Inox Wind was set up, the then Congress government withdrew key benefits, including a generation-based incentive.“Renewables is something that is driven by policy and political intent. “Some people may say, ‘You are born with a silver spoon, but it is very easy to lose it all in the third generation,” he says. “Inox Wind is set to become the most profitable company in the ($4 billion) Inox Group this fiscal,” he tells Forbes India.ĭevansh believes he cannot afford to fail because of the robust reputation that the Inox Group enjoys. He is confident of its continued success. A strong current order book of 1,200 megawatts (MW) and investor confidence place Inox Wind, and Devansh, in a sweet spot. And in five years, he steered the company onto the path of profitability-a rarity among local wind energy firms. With a corpus of Rs 40 crore borrowed from Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited, he started Inox Wind in 2009, at a time when major players like Suzlon and Bharat Forge were stumbling. But the Inox Group was looking to diversify, and given India’s energy deficit and the global thrust towards cleaner forms of energy, Devansh convinced his family of the power of wind. Neither his father nor his uncle Pavan (chairman and managing director of Inox Air Products) had prior experience in this sector. When he returned to India from the US in 2007, he shadowed his father Vivek (managing director, Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited) for two years before deciding to enter the renewable energy sector. “We have a market cap of almost a billion-and-a-half dollars,” says Devansh, who, as director of his company, is the youngest family member to hold a position in the chemicals-to-multiplexes Inox Group. His company, Inox Wind, the renewable wind energy solutions provider, raised Rs 1,000 crore and was oversubscribed 18 times. In March 2015, the 28-year-old third-generation scion of Inox Group led one of the biggest initial public offerings (IPOs) that India has seen in the last two years. As such he also included a rudimentary reverb function to help mask singers' deficiencies. His biggest contribution was understanding the difficulty amateurs had in singing pop songs, recording his own versions of popular songs in keys that made them easier for casual singers. In 1971, nightclub musician Daisuke Inoue independently invented his own karaoke machine in the city of Kobe. Another early pioneer was Toshiharu Yamashita, who worked as a singing coach, and in 1970 sold an 8-track playback deck with microphone for sing-alongs. However, he ran into distribution troubles and ceased production of the Sparko Box shortly thereafter. For media, it used 8-track cassette tapes of commercially available instrumental recordings. He subsequently began mass producing coin-operated versions under the brand name "Sparko Box," making it the first commercially available karaoke machine. Japanese engineer Shigeichi Negishi, who ran a consumer electronics assembly business, made the first prototype in 1967. Even before the Invention of the first machines, the word “karaoke” had long been used in Japan’s entertainment industry to refer to the use of instrumental recordings as backing tracks in situations when a live band could not be arranged for a singer. The karaoke-styled machine was developed in various places in Japan. This may have been attributable to the introduction of music cassette tapes, technology that arose from the need to customize music recordings and the desire for a "handy" format that would allow fast and convenient duplication of music and thereby meet the requirements of the entertainers' lifestyles and the 'footloose' character of the entertainment industry.ġ970s: Development of the karaoke machine In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, stored audible materials began to dominate the music recording industry and revolutionized the portability and ease of use of band and instrumental music by musicians and entertainers as the demand for entertainers increased globally. Sing-alongs (present since the beginning of singing) fundamentally changed with the introduction of new technology. The primary difference between Karaoke and sing-along songs is the absence of the lead vocalist. History A karaoke bar in Wuhan, Hubei, China 1960s: Development of audio-visual-recording devices įrom 1961 to 1966, the American TV network NBC carried a karaoke-like series, Sing Along with Mitch, featuring host Mitch Miller and a chorus, which superimposed the lyrics to their songs near the bottom of the TV screen for home audience participation. The global karaoke market has been estimated to be worth nearly $10 billion. In Chinese-speaking countries and regions such as mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, a karaoke box is called a KTV. Lyrics are typically displayed on a video screen, along with a moving symbol, changing colour, or music video images, to guide the singer. The music is an instrumental version of a well-known popular song. Karaoke ( / ˌ k ær i ˈ oʊ k i/ Japanese: ( listen) カラオケ, clipped compound of Japanese kara 空 "empty" and ōkesutora オーケストラ "orchestra") is a type of interactive entertainment usually offered in clubs and bars, where people sing along to recorded music using a microphone. Those who experience more symptoms than the 'kaleidoscope' really need to push their physician for more concrete answers. Until physicians are educated on this 'kaleidoscope' effect, I doubt we're going to find an absolute answer or determination of what we are experiencing. I've only had them once or twice while driving and was close enough to my destination (luckily) that I could get off the road within a minute or two after noticing that it was happening. In 'my' mind, I just need to make sure that I'm drinking enough water all day because there is nothing I can do about the episodes otherwise. So today, after having another episode, I decided to search for either a cause or at least some information. It may start on the right of each eye and move to the left - like a slow moving 'ring' that passes over each eye. It starts in a different spot every time, and it always in both eyes. The only thing 'I' have found is to drink water and sit until the 'kaleidoscope' passes. Sometimes I'll go several months without one. It's pretty common for me to get them on average once a month. I know all about hydrating, but sometimes I slip and that's when I get another episode. Even today I work out 4 days a week at the gym. Once in a while I'd experience an episode after playing racquetball, but I knew why and what to do for that. Additionally, during that time I played racquetball most every day. During most of the 90's I was a personal trainer and body builder. Let me research that.' My physical health? I've eaten only natural foods since 1983. There are some things that physicians simply are not prepared to address and blow off a patient due to lack of expertise, but would never be honest enough with their patient to say, 'I don't know. Until I found this forum I didn't know what it was called because everybody 'I' ever talked to about it, including physicians, simply ignore me - AND ignore the fact that I've had Tinitus all my life. I've never had a headache before or after an episode, and never felt ill. If you drink a couple (yes at least 2) glasses of water right when you 'see' the effect coming on, you can minimize the intensity, but it's not going to stop until it's darn good and ready. You can't drive during them nor read or watch TV. As the link from 'pugh' stated, it lasts about 30 minutes. I just had one episode about 40 minutes ago. I'm 62 - I've had the 'kaleidoscope' effect since.well, all my life as far as I can remember. If you are not drinking water during any exercise, that's just plain wrong. That type of activity most certainly drains a large amount of water from your body. Several people here have stated that they got the 'effect' after strenuous activity and sweating. Chances are it's been a while since you drank some water. The next time you get the 'kaleidoscope' effect, think back to the last time you drank some water. |
